How to find what is actually slowing down your Shopify store

2026-07-30

Most speed advice for Shopify starts with a myth: that the platform is slow. It is not. Shopify's own infrastructure is fast almost everywhere on earth. What is slow is what stores install on top of it. The good news is that you can find your own bottlenecks in an afternoon, with free tools.

This is the same process I run in the first week of my speed optimization service, trimmed to what an owner can do alone.

Measure the way a buyer experiences it

Open Chrome DevTools, switch the network throttle to "Fast 4G" and the CPU throttle to 4x slowdown, then load your home page and a product page. That configuration is much closer to a phone on mobile data than the unthrottled desktop connection most owners test with.

Watch for the moment the main product image appears. That is your LCP, the number Google uses and the one buyers feel. Under 2.5 seconds is fine. Over 4 is costing you orders.

Count your apps, then count their scripts

Open the network tab and filter by JS. Every third-party domain you see is an app or pixel loading code on the page, usually on every page, whether it is used there or not. A typical store I look at carries 15 to 25 of these. The store uses perhaps six.

The uninstall button is the single most underrated speed tool on Shopify. For apps you keep, check whether they offer a "load only where used" setting.

Look at what the theme drags in

Themes accumulate. Sliders from a feature you disabled, fonts from a design three revisions ago, a video background nobody remembers. In DevTools' coverage panel you can see how much of your CSS and JS is never executed , on older themes it is often more than half.

Know which fixes are worth paying for

Some of what you find is a ten-minute fix. Some of it is real engineering work, like render-blocking theme code or an image pipeline that was never set up properly. The way to decide is revenue impact, which is exactly what a structured store audit prices out for you, finding by finding.

Fix the free things first. Measure again. Then decide whether the remaining seconds are worth a professional pass. If they are, that is what my plans exist for.
